My main character is a young adult named Kael. Who has spent his life believing he is an ordinary member of Clan Kinreef, one of the fifteen merfolk clans that inhabit the ocean kingdom beneath the tides. He is haunted by the loss of his father and abandoned by his grandfather, who’s grief drove him into isolation. Kael also struggled with his grief and wants a quiet life among the reefs of his mothers clan he calls home.

That changes when a violent storm drags at thirteen years old dragged him into harsh current no young merfolk should have survive. 

The ocean answers his grief back.

Strange powers were awakened within him, Kael discovers a family secret he was never told. He carries the rare bloodline of the Keepers of the Tides, an ancient order the clans all thought disappeared generations ago. Once chosen by the sea itself, the Keepers are armed with the ability to command the sea’s deepest currents. They were created by the sea itself to keep the balance and rhythm of the sea. As well as to lock away a dark entity beneath the oceans trenches.

The prison will fail.

The currents have shifted, creatures are starting to emerge from it’s forbidden depths. Entire clans over time begin to fear the power inside Kael as he gets older and stronger. They fear him as much as the darkness rising beneath the sea’s trenches. While rival clans continue to argue over other issues they are divided on, Kael is trained by the kingdom to learn how to control his powers. He also must uncover the truth his grandfather spent a lifetime hiding from him. 

The time is running short as the oceans ecosystem starts showing signs of destruction. The entity is imprisoned beneath the trench and is breaking out and it remembers the bloodline that put it there.

And it senses the last Keeper has returned.

If freed the entity will bring untold horrors and a massive storm that will end all life as they know it. The human world above remains unaware of the danger gathering below them. Kael must decide whether to embrace his destiny by facing his grief or watch both worlds drown. Because time is running out for the clans to decide what Kael will be, beneath a tide older than memory itself.
